We all know that smoking greatly affects the smoker’s lung. However, it’s possible that you don’t know that smoking affects not only the lung of the smoker, but all parts of the body, including bones, digestion, blood, oxygen flow as well as the reproductive system.

Let’s look at some smoking side effects you may not heard of before.

It may sound weird, but recent researches showed that the leading cause of bladder cancer is smoking cigarettes. If you manage to stop smoking, you will reduce the risk of bladder cancer by 50%. However, the remaining 50% will be reached only after a long period of time.

Another cancer you could develop from smoking is the digestive system cancer. The digestive system cancer is a cancer occurring in any part of the digestive system. This includes the stomach, the intestines but also the organs connected to this tube, like the liver or the pancreas.

Smoking is one of the most predisposing factors of pancreatic cancer. Smokers have with 75% more chance to develop pancreatic cancer than non-smokers. Even after quitting for ten years, this percent will drop only to 20%.

Another type of cancer is the colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer. With over 650000 deaths per year is the colon cancer one of the most common form of cancer and at the same time, one of the leading death causes. An American Cancer Society found that smokers have 40% more chance to die from colon cancer than non-smokers.

Smoking also leads to the loss of calcium. After smoking for years, a lot of calcium is lost from the bones, which leads to osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). The bones not only get thinner, they get weaker, too. Older smokers are much more predisposed to bone fractures due to osteoporosis. Calcium loss is also affecting the health and strength of the teeth.

Due to the toxic smoke and the plaque caused by it, the heart is put under heavy duress. This can cause high blood pressure on a long term, but is also one of the main causes of cardiovascular diseases, strokes and coronary heart diseases. The last one is the leading cause of death of smokers.

Smoking greatly increases respiratory problems like asthma and is by far the main contributor to lung cancer. Statistics show the sad truth: almost 90% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. Passive smoking also represents a significant increase of risk.

Smoking during pregnancy can cause irreversible damage to the fetus. Lots of cases have been recorded from stillbirth, placental abnormalities as well as congenial malformations, when the mother couldn’t or didn’t want to stop smoking. The risk of the sudden infant death is also greatly raised if the pregnant woman is smoking.
